District 4 Candidate Forum
Come meet and ask questions of candidates seeking the DFL endorsement in the upcoming special election for Ramsey County Commission at a:
Candidate Forum
Thursday, January 13
7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Weyerhaeuser Chapel, Macalester College (#27 on the map)
1600 Grand Ave St. Paul
Dear Senate District 65 DFL activist,
By now you probably know that your Ramsey County Commissioner, Sue Haigh, has announced her resignation from the Ramsey County Commission effective February 1. As someone chosen at your precinct caucus last year to be a delegate to our 2004 Senate District convention, you are also eligible as a delegate to vote to endorse a candidate to succeed Commissioner Haigh at a special DFL endorsing convention on Sunday, January 23. (You should be receiving official notice of this convention shortly, if you have not already. The candidate endorsed by the special convention on January 23 will represent the DFL in the non-partisan primary election to be held on February 15, and ideally as well in the non-partisan general election to be held on March 15.)
In preparation for the convention, you are cordially invited to attend a candidate forum this Thursday, January 13 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Weyerhauser Memorial Chapel on the campus of Macalester College. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to hear from and ask questions of the candidates seeking the DFL endorsement for this very important position, and should help you make an informed choice about your vote at the upcoming convention. (The forum is being sponsored by the Senate District 64 DFL and the Progressive Caucus.)
Please don't miss this opportunity to learn about and discuss with your fellow Democrats the important issues facing our city and county in the next few years. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sincerely,
- John Stiles
- Senate District 65 DFL Chair
- Allison Rick Thrash
- Senate District 65 DFL Associate Chair
PS - If you are interested in the boundaries of the County Commission district concerned in this election, you may view them on the Internet at Ramsey County's website.

SD65 in 2005 - Let's Talk About It!
We are writing to invite you and any and all other interested parties to a series of four informal discussions in December and January on the future direction of DFL Senate District 65 in 2005.
These discussions will be a chance to share ideas and brainstorm what we as a local, grassroots party unit can and should do to advance a strong Democratic agenda both locally and across Minnesota and become even more effective at winning elections.
Do you have an opinion (or two, or three) on where our Senate District organization should go, what it should do to get there and whom it should involve? Then join us for one or all of these sessions!
Each of the four discussions will focus on a different topic. The date, time and location of each is below.
We look forward to seeing you there!
- John Stiles
- Senate District 65 DFL Chair

What we accomplished on November 2
Dear Senate District 65 DFL activist and friend,
We have much to be proud of in the results we achieved on November 2, both in Minnesota and especially in Senate District 65. As you already know, we won by a margin of nearly 100,000 votes statewide - and picked up 13 seats in the state House of Representatives along the way. In addition, we produced an extremely strong result here in Senate District 65 for John Kerry and John Edwards, as well as for our congresswoman Betty McCollum and our state representatives Carlos Mariani and Cy Thao.
This result would not have been possible without the support, encouragement, help, hard work - and of course the vote - of each one of you. We also know that along with the labor you put in to organized campaign activities, much of this work and support took place in individual actions you took, and conversations you had with friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances. All of it is indispensable, and individually and together we have much for which to thank each other and congratulate ourselves.
We would like to share with you below highlights of the results from Senate District 65, which illustrate the progress we have made and point to the need to continue to engage ourselves and our neighbors in the political process and the DFL agenda in the next two years.
We also wish to remind you that we are entering into an extremely important election for mayor of Saint Paul in 2005, as well as for the Saint Paul School Board, and invite you to pay close attention to and stay engaged in the process of nominating a candidate and electing a true DFLer to our city’s top position.
Once again, we thank you for your commitment to democracy, and for all you do for your party - our party. We look forward to working with you again very soon.
- John Stiles
